The National Day of Prayer is May 5, 2011.
Theme: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
Verse: I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Psalm 91:2
This year, it is more important to pray for our nation than ever before. In the last week, storms ravaged the South, David Wilkerson died, and Osama Bin Laden died. Muslim terrorists have vowed to retaliate. We need to seek God as our Mighty Fortress.
History of The National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer has been around for a long time. In 1952, Harry S. Truman signed it into law. In 1988, Ronald Reagan designated it as the first Thrusday in May. Every president since Truman has issued a proclamation designating a day of prayer including President Obama.
But the have been days of prayer since the beginning of United States history. The Contenintal Congress called for prayer in 1775 asking the people to pray for wisdom. Abraham Lincoln called for a day of prayer during the Civil War. There have been 135 national calls to prayer, humiliation, fasting and thanksgiving by the President of the United States (1789-2009). In fact, 33 presidents have declared a national day of prayer. Four of the presidents who didn’t, died in office.
